Baba Chandragup

The mud volcano Chandragup is supposed holy by Hindus and is a necessary stop for pilgrims on their route to the shrine of Hinglaj Mata. Believers throw coconuts into the craters to make prayers and thank the gods for acknowledging their prayers. The Chandragup mud volcano is worshipped as a personification of Lord Shiva and hence described Baba Chandragup. Many pilgrims consider that Hinglaj’s temple may only be accessed only after paying respect to Baba Chandrakup. Traditionally, the pilgrims stay awake all the night fasting and thinking of the sins they will admit at the rim of the crater next day and bake roti made out of ingredients shared by all the yātrīs.On the next day, they climb the slope of Chandrakup. The roṭ is then served as an oblation to Baba Chandrakup. Nowadays, coconuts and dal are offered. At the top of the Mud Volcano, the pilgrims first have to introduce themselves with their full name and region of birth and then call out their sins in front of the other people. According to the bubbling of the mud in Volcano and the reaction of the wind, the chaṛīdār can tell if the pilgrim’s sins are pardoned.
